Type Beat Thumbnail Size for YouTube (2026): Specs & Checklist
The right YouTube thumbnail size for type beats and Shorts in 2026: resolution, ratio, format and file size from YouTube Help, plus how to add it and a checklist.
Type Beat Thumbnail Size for YouTube: The 2026 Specs
YouTube recommends a 3840 × 2160 px thumbnail (16:9) for videos and 2160 × 3840 px (9:16) for Shorts, in JPG or PNG. The minimum is 640 px wide for videos and 640 px high for Shorts. Bigger is better: YouTube also uses your thumbnail as the preview image in the embedded player.
All numbers below come from YouTube Help (checked November 2026).
The short answer
| What | Type beat video | Short |
| Recommended size | 3840 × 2160 px | 2160 × 3840 px |
| Minimum | 640 px wide | 640 px high |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 | 9:16 |
| Format | JPG or PNG | JPG or PNG |
| Max file size (computer) | 50 MB | 50 MB |
| Max file size (phone) | 2 MB | Shorts thumbnails: computer only |
What about 1280 × 720? You will still see it in a lot of guides. It works, because it is above the 640 px minimum, but YouTube now asks for the largest image you can give it.
How to add a custom thumbnail to a type beat
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- In the left menu, click Content.
- Open the video (or the Shorts tab for a Short) and click the pencil icon.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and pick your image.
- Click Save. The new thumbnail can take a little time to show up.
Can't upload a custom thumbnail? Check these 3 things
- Your channel is not verified. Custom thumbnails are an "intermediate" feature: you unlock them by verifying your phone number. You can check it in YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
- "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached". YouTube limits how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload per day. Wait 24 hours and try again. Producers who upload many beats a day hit this more often.
- The image breaks the rules. Thumbnails must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, or they can be removed and your channel can get a strike.
Vertical beat videos: watch the 4:5 crop
If you post a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscriptions pages. Your thumbnail still shows in the watch feed, watch history and on computers. For Shorts, design in 9:16 from the start.
What makes a good type beat thumbnail
- Readable on a phone: a few big words at most, strong contrast.
- Matches the title: the artist style or mood in your title should be obvious in the picture.
- Same style on every beat: your channel becomes recognizable in search results and suggestions.
- Images you have the right to use: your own photos, your own designs, or licensed images.
- Test before you change everything: YouTube's thumbnail A/B testing is an "advanced" feature. If you have it, compare two versions instead of guessing.
